Mommy Makeover

What is a Mommy Makeover?

The mommy makeover is a procedure that combines surgeries to address body changes after pregnancy. Common options include a tummy tuck for a flatter stomach and breast procedures to improve size or lift. Liposuction may also be included to target stubborn fat. While not a weight-loss solution, it can help achieve a more defined figure after childbirth.

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT?

Immediately after mommy makeover surgery, you will start to notice initial results. Including a firmer abdomen with a narrower waist, lifted more firm breasts and improved body contours. In the months following surgery, your results will continue to improve as swelling subsides. By this time, you should be enjoying the full benefits of your mommy makeover, feeling more confident and comfortable in your post childbirth appearance.

SOME FREQUENTLY
ASKED QUESTIONS

How do I plan for my Mommy Makeover?

Before any surgery is performed, your first consultation with your cosmetic surgeon will be a discussion about what your surgical goals and expectations are, and what a mommy makeover can achieve. Your surgeon will examine the area that needs treatment, evaluate your general health status and explain the procedure to you so you know all you need to in order to make an informed decision.

He or she will take photographs and discuss what outcomes you can realistically expect, as well as the risks. This consultation is the time to ask any questions and discuss any anxiety you have about the procedure.

What is the procedure for a Mommy Makeover?

Your mommy makeover will be tailored to your specific goals, but often combines procedures such as a tummy tuck, a breast lift that can include breast augmentation and liposuction.

For your abdomen, a tummy tuck targets loose skin and stretched muscles. The procedure removes excess skin and tightens the abdominal muscles, aiming for a flatter stomach. Breast surgery can include a breast lift to reshape and uplift breasts, along with augmentaion to add volume. The choice depends on your desired outcome. Liposuction then targets stubborn fat deposits around your abdomen and other areas, refining your overall body contours.

How should I prepare for my Mommy Makeover?

Before your surgery you may be asked to stop smoking for 2 – 4 weeks prior to the procedure. Nicotine retards the healing process, and quitting for as long as possible before surgery helps improve blood flow.

You will also have to have a blood test before surgery is performed.

You should stop taking certain medication, like aspirin and some anti-inflammatory drugs. Avoid recreational drugs, and disclose to your surgeon any other medication you’re taking, since you may need to adjust these.

Be sure to arrange for transport to and from the clinic, since you will not be able to drive yourself after the procedure.

Where will my Mommy Makeover be performed?

The procedure will be performed in one of our fully equipped operating theatres.

What anaesthetic will be used for my Mommy Makeover?

The procedure will be performed under general anaesthetic. Your surgeon will disucss this recommendation with you.

How do I recover from my Mommy Makeover?

Your recovery will be dependent on the specific procedures performed and your individual healing factors. You may spend just a few hours at the clinic after the procedure, or your surgeon may recommend that you stay overnight.

Once you leave the clinic, you will experience some discomfort in the first week, but your surgeon will prescribe medication to help ease the pain. Thereafter, the discomfort will gradually decrease. During the recovery period you will need to wear an abdominal binder to support your abdomen and prevent fluid buildup.

Your surgeon will advise you not to place any excessive force on the incisions as they heal and to avoid any strenuous activity, like jogging, gym workouts or heavy lifting for the first few weeks.

What can I expect after my Mommy Makeover?

The swelling, bruising and discomfort you will feel are normal. After surgery, you will have a gauze dressing over the incision. You may also need a small plastic drain, to drain the fluid for a week or two. You should keep the dressing dry for at least 48 hours and avoid baths, hot tubs or swimming for about 6 weeks.

There will be sutures along the incision line, which will dissolve on their own. During the first few days, you may not be able to stand up straight, but you should do some walking every day to get back to moving normally and try to move your legs and feet often. You’ll notice the changes in the appearance of your breasts immediately. Scars will fade and soften gradually and significantly over time.

When can I return to normal activities?

The time period differs from patient to patient, the main factors that will affect your recovery time are your age, health, and body weight. Recovery will take up to six weeks and you should avoid doing any heavy lifting, strenuous or vigorous activity for this time period.

What are the risks involved in my Mommy Makeover?

With this procedure, like all other surgery, there is a (low) risk of post-operative infection, bleeding and swelling. There can be an increased risk of complications if you have diabetes or poor circulation, if you smoke, or if you have heart, lung, or liver disease.

Other complications can include, amongst others, the general risks related to anaesthesia, as well as loss of skin, fluid accumulation, wound separation, blood clotting, numbness, scarring and asymmetry.

Your surgeon will discuss all the risks with you before you consent to the procedure.
